Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to people in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil experienced a major stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg greatly impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, resulting in financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila would not be able to afford the device in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could figure out how to use it.

Thankfully, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
